Pico Hydro Portugal design and install pico hydro electric power generation systems using metal water wheels and permanent magnet generators (or alternators). The systems are powerful and flexible, making electric power generation from renewable resources a possibility for many sites that are deemed unsuitable or uneconomical to develop using conventional micro hydro turbine technology.

'Pico hydro' is defined as a micro hydro system generating up to 5 kiloWatts of electrical output, catering for a single household up to a small community.

Hydro power generation on such a small scale has a number of unique challenges and requires a different kind of thinking to bigger schemes.
